How is IR 64 Parboiled Rice processed?

Parboiled processing gives a firm, non-sticky grain that tolerates long holding and reheating. At the mill the sequence is:

  1. Paddy is soaked in hot water until the grain is fully hydrated.
  2. Steaming gelatinises the starch and moves B vitamins from the bran into the grain.
  3. The paddy is dried slowly back to milling moisture.
  4. It is hulled, polished, graded and sortexed to the contracted broken percentage.
  5. Every lot is tested for moisture, broken percentage and foreign matter before packing.
