Can you export onion from India to the United Kingdom?
Yes. Om Prasadam exports onion (pyaaz) from India to the UK from its own processing facility. Each lot is graded, cleaned and tested before loading, then shipped from Mundra or Nhava Sheva to Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway in about 20–26 days; about 28 MT in a 40ft reefer. Consignments are documented for the Food Standards Agency and the GB border regime, with IPAFFS pre-notification, GB residue limits and UK food labelling prepared before dispatch. Indian red onion supplies UK South Asian grocery and restaurants, where its pungency and colour are preferred for curry bases.
What is onion (pyaaz)?
Indian red onion, mostly from Nashik around the Lasalgaon market, is a pungent, deep-red onion with tight dry skin that stores and travels well. Its botanical name is Allium cepa. In India it is grown mainly in Nashik (Lasalgaon), Maharashtra; Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh; rabi crop March to May (stores until October); kharif crop October to December.
Typically used for: Curry bases, foodservice and retail.

Documents for importing onion into the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom regulates imported food through the Food Standards Agency and the GB border regime. These are the documents and checks prepared for onion consignments, as each one requires:
- IPAFFS pre-notification. Where the product requires it — fresh produce and foods on the high-risk list — consignments are pre-notified on the UK’s IPAFFS system by your import agent; we send every certificate in time for the notification.
- GB residue limits. Lots are tested against GB maximum residue levels at NABL-accredited laboratories, and the report travels with the consignment.
- UK food labelling. Retail packs are labelled to the Food Information Regulations 2014 — English, allergens emphasised, net quantity, origin and a UK importer address — printed before dispatch.
- Export documentation. Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading or air waybill, and a phytosanitary certificate where the product needs one.
- Phytosanitary certificate. Issued by India’s National Plant Protection Organisation after inspection, certifying the consignment free of quarantine pests.
- Cold-chain record. Produce is pre-cooled at the packhouse and shipped with a temperature log covering the packhouse, the truck and the aircraft or reefer.
- Onion import conditions. India sets onion export policy season by season, at times with a minimum export price or a temporary restriction; we confirm the current position when we quote.
