Can you export cumin seeds from India to the United States?

Yes. Om Prasadam exports cumin seeds (jeera) from India to the US from its own processing facility. Each lot is graded, cleaned and tested before loading, then shipped from Mundra or Nhava Sheva to New York and Newark, Savannah, Houston and Long Beach in about 26–32 days to the East Coast; about 16 MT in a 20ft container. Consignments are documented for the US Food and Drug Administration, with FDA facility registration and Prior Notice, FSVP support and US food labelling prepared before dispatch. US demand runs from Indian grocery to chili-powder and Tex-Mex seasoning blenders, who specify volatile oil, a Salmonella-negative result and often steam sterilisation.

What is cumin seeds (jeera)?

Cumin seeds, known in India as jeera, are the dried seed of the cumin plant, valued for a warm, earthy aroma that comes from volatile oils of 2.5% and above. Its botanical name is Cuminum cyminum. In India it is grown mainly in Gujarat (traded through Unjha) and Rajasthan; harvested February to April; supplied year-round.

Typically used for: Tempering, curry powders, garam masala and chili seasoning.

Documents for importing cumin seeds into the United States

The United States regulates imported food through the US Food and Drug Administration. These are the documents and checks prepared for cumin seeds consignments, as each one requires:

  • FDA facility registration and Prior Notice. Our facility is registered with the US FDA, and Prior Notice is filed before the vessel or flight arrives, as the Bioterrorism Act requires.
  • FSVP support. Your Foreign Supplier Verification Program must verify us as a supplier; we provide the hazard analysis, lot test reports and certificates it needs.
  • US food labelling. Retail packs carry FDA-format labelling: English, a Nutrition Facts panel where the product requires one, allergen declaration, net weight in pounds and grams, and country of origin.
  • Export documentation. Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading or air waybill, Importer Security Filing data before loading for ocean shipments, and a phytosanitary certificate where needed.
  • Spices Board registration. Exported under our Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices (CRES) from the Spices Board of India.
  • Aflatoxin, residue and microbial testing. Each lot is tested for aflatoxins, pesticide residues and Salmonella at an accredited laboratory. Ethylene oxide is never used; steam sterilisation is available on request.
  • FDA Salmonella screening. FDA samples imported spices for Salmonella. Lots are tested before shipment, and steam-sterilised product can be supplied for blenders that require it.
