Can you export finger millet from India to the United States?
Yes. Om Prasadam exports finger millet (ragi) from India to the US from its own processing facility. Each lot is graded, cleaned and tested before loading, then shipped from Mundra or Nhava Sheva to New York and Newark, Savannah, Houston and Long Beach in about 26–32 days to the East Coast; about 25 MT in a 20ft container. Consignments are documented for the US Food and Drug Administration, with FDA facility registration and Prior Notice, FSVP support and US food labelling prepared before dispatch. Finger millet sells to US health-food brands for its calcium content and to South Indian grocery as ragi flour and malt.
What is finger millet (ragi)?
Finger millet, or ragi, is a small, reddish-brown, gluten-free grain notable for its calcium content of about 344 mg per 100 g, far above rice or wheat. Its botanical name is Eleusine coracana. In India it is grown mainly in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand; harvested October to December; supplied year-round.
Typically used for: Ragi flour, malt drinks, porridge, baby food and baking.

Documents for importing finger millet into the United States
The United States regulates imported food through the US Food and Drug Administration. These are the documents and checks prepared for finger millet consignments, as each one requires:
- FDA facility registration and Prior Notice. Our facility is registered with the US FDA, and Prior Notice is filed before the vessel or flight arrives, as the Bioterrorism Act requires.
- FSVP support. Your Foreign Supplier Verification Program must verify us as a supplier; we provide the hazard analysis, lot test reports and certificates it needs.
- US food labelling. Retail packs carry FDA-format labelling: English, a Nutrition Facts panel where the product requires one, allergen declaration, net weight in pounds and grams, and country of origin.
- Export documentation. Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading or air waybill, Importer Security Filing data before loading for ocean shipments, and a phytosanitary certificate where needed.
- Fumigation certificate. Grain is fumigated with phosphine before sealing and certified, so stored-grain insects do not travel with the cargo.
- Khapra beetle declaration. India is a khapra beetle country for USDA APHIS purposes. Where required, the phytosanitary certificate carries the additional declaration and the container is inspected before stuffing.
